"I believe that the day will come when everyone will be able to smile together."

Impey Barbicane is a man who accompanied Arsène Lupin to London. He is energetic, care-free, and tends to get carried away fairly easily, but no one can deny his extraordinary ingenuity. He is searching for an important item that was taken from him long ago.[1]

He is one of the five characters the player can choose to pursue in the game as Cardia Beckford.

Appearance[]

Impey is a tall and muscular young man who has a unique appearance with a steampunk theme. He has long red hair that is braided into a ponytail that reaches his waist, while the hair framing his face is shorter and pokes outwards and bright green eyes. He has two noticeable fangs in his mouth which are seen when he smiles or talks. Impey's attire includes goggles on his head, a necklace, a white striped tank top with zippers, an orange engineer suit with one arm free, gloves, a sort of pouch that hangs by his waist holding a wrench, and black knee-high boots.

Personality[]

Having a very excitable and slightly childish demeanor, Impey is mocked by others. Despite this, he appears to be very self-confident. He flirts without worry that he'll be rejected, he boasts without care that someone will insult him, and he smiles easily. Cardia believes that he is the kindest person in the world.

He claims that one day, he will be the first man to land on the moon...

Story[]

Prologue []

A mysterious duo (later revealed to be Impey and Arsène Lupin) idle time away in the area around a mansion in Wales. They wait for days before a group of British soldiers, lead by Captain Leonhardt, finally arrive, signalling the direction of the duo's target.

As it turns out, the British Government is looking for a monster that can burn skin on the orders of Finis, leader of a secret government agency known as Twilight. When they find Cardia Beckford in the mansion, they are surprised that their monster is a woman and proceed to take her into custody.

Before she can be taken, though, Lupin and Impey intervene. Using Impey's inventions, they stop the automobiles in their tracks. From there, Lupin reveals himself and is deliberately showy in order to distract the guards, slipping away with her under cover of smoke, despite Cardia's initial protest.

Lupin promises to rid Cardia of her poison, and Cardia agrees to go with him, causing the start of the adventure. The next morning, they meet up with Impey, though he is at first unaware that Cardia was their target the night before and is distracted by how beautiful she is.

Chapter 1: London Steam[]

When the trio reaches London, Cardia can choose to either go with Lupin or go with Impey across the checkpoint. If she chooses to go with Impey, he pretends that they are married and calls her "Natasha." She is confused by this, as they had not rehearsed their plans ahead of time, and the checkpoint guards are immediately suspicious of them. Impey tries to use one of his inventions to escape, a "Hypnosis Device" that will ensnare the minds of his enemies, but it fails, so he ends up picking up Cardia in his arms and running into the city.

They eventually get separated, and Cardia encounters Victor. When Cardia and Victor make it to the mansion, Impey is hostile, believing that Victor has taken Cardia by force. He claims that Cardia is his girl, which earns him a smack from Lupin. After Cardia explains their situation, he calms down, but covertly asks Victor if it's true that he can remove Cardia's poison so that one might engage in certain activities with her sometime in the future.

Chapter 2: The Strongest Stalker[]

When Cardia is feeling down after finding that she doesn't have a heartbeat, the group heads to gang territory to unwind. If Cardia chooses to spend time with Impey, then he will boast that he was the obvious choice as the best boy, despite Cardia's explanations that she didn't want to impose on Lupin or Victor. He introduces her to slot machines and tries to show off his mad skills, only for Cardia to win even more than he does. Flustered, he has her try out an extremely difficult slot machine imported from America, and when she cannot win, he pulls out a device that will rig the machine for him. He is overhead by security, and they haul him off for questioning.

Eventually, he manages to escape with his life. Then, Van Helsing attacks their party, and they are forced to make a run for it. Impey tries to fight him, but is blown away by the force of his bullets. He manages to survive the blow relatively unscathed, to Van Helsing's surprise.

Chapter 3: A Girl’s Education[]

Van Helsing is impressed by the food at the mansion, but he immediately retracts his compliments once he learns that Impey is the cook. When Lupin suggests that Cardia takes lessons with the gang, Impey offers to teach her mechanics.

If Cardia picks Impey as her first teacher, then everyone at the table will react with disbelief, much to Impey's annoyance. He takes her out to his workstation and shows her some of his inventions, including his "Dangerous Dude Detector" which, in theory, will emit a beeping sound if brought near any suspicious individuals. Naturally, it starts violently beeping when Cardia brings it close to Impey. He trashes the doll, claiming that it's defective. He moves on and starts teaching her how to drive an automobile.

After a few days, everyone is boasting about how great a pupil Cardia is, and Lupin and Van Helsing get into a pissing contest for a bit, only to start ragging on Impey when he claims that his lessons were the best. Victor brings out the new set of clothes that he made for Cardia, and Impey compliments her profusely. Lupin then announces that he has a plan in the works, and Cardia gets to pick her next teacher for the day.

If she picks Impey, then he'll joke that they'll be learning matters of romance together. Van Helsing threatens to blow his head off. Impey decides to teach her to fly the ornithopter, and the two of them take off into the sky. Impey remarks that the power of science is incredible because it allows people to do wonderful things like exploring the skies.

Chapter 4: Train Robbery[]

When Lupin presents his plans to hijack the train to kidnap Finis, Impey is shocked by the audacity of the plan. Impey is hesitant about the plan, but eventually, he acquiesces. Impey gets put on the team in charge of the getaway—Lupin, Saint-Germain, and himself—and will pilot the ornithopter.

Before the plan, Cardia can choose to go speak with Impey to see if he needs anything. She finds Impey struggling with installing a NeoSteam engine in the ornithopter, and she tells him that she respects him for his hard work. He talks a bit about his background, how he was mentored by a "weird old guy" in his childhood neighborhood who nurtured his love for engineering.

When they get to the train station, Cardia is stunned by the sheer size of the train, and Impey tells her that he felt the same way when he first saw it. He goes off into a tangent about the mechanics of the train. If Cardia goes with Impey's team, then the group travels to the take-off point for the ornithopter. He tinkers with the machine, and Cardia laughs at his antics. He remarks that she has a nice smile.

Unfortunately, the wind is too strong, and Impey has a hard time piloting the aircraft. He drops off Lupin and Cardia, but has to fall back. After the confrontation with Finis, Cardia manages to escape onto the ornithopter with Impey at the helm.

Chapter 5: The Vampire’s Requiem[]

At mealtime, everyone is disappointed by the failure of the train heist, and Frankenstein brings up that they're flat broke. Apparently, everyone has been spending too much money, and Impey spent a large chunk on ornithopter repairs. Impey suggests that they sell off some of Saint-Germain's antiques, and Saint-Germain instills within him the fear of death for daring to suggest such a thing. Impey retracts his suggestion.

They eventually see a job opportunity: in exchange for $10 million, they must bring in a thief who's been stealing vampire antiques, as he has recently announced his plans to target an auction. At the auction, Cardia expresses concerns over the fact that they will be profiting off of someone else's life, as the auctioneers make it clear that they will torture the thief when they catch him. Saint-Germain then offers to pay for the group's living expenses, if they can bring the thief to Leonhardt instead, and Impey is relieved. the thief is revealed to be Delacroix II, the son of the late vampire king, who is reclaiming vampire artifacts pillaged from his people.

They chase after Delacroix, and Impey blocks one of Delacroix's attack for Cardia. He complains about the pain and scolds Delacroix for attacking a lady, but Delacroix is surprised that the impact didn't dismember him.

When the group goes with Van Helsing to the ruins of the vampire castle, Impey remarks that the place is terribly run-down. Cardia asks him if he's been there before, and he says he hasn't, but nevertheless looks upon the ruins with sadness.

Chapter 6: Negotiated Solution[]

Impey declares that he will make a feast for everyone in the house to lighten the mood, since everyone is feeling somewhat forlorn after the events at the vampire castle. Van Helsing remarks that he still can't believe that someone like Impey could make such good food, and Impey can't tell whether that's a compliment or an insult. Van Helsing decides to cook, and Impey questions if it'll even be edible. Spoiler alert: no, it won't be.

Also, Impey has taken to calling Delacroix II "Delly" (Dora-chan) because his full name is a mouthful.

All of the people in the mansion are now wanted fugitives, due to their association with Victor. Victor offers to surrender himself, and Impey refuses to allow him to. The group eventually decides on a plan to force Queen Victoria to retract Victor's terrorist status by having a public confrontation.

While the group is at the hotel planning to go confront the queen, they are ambushed by the royal guard, led by Holmes. Impey pilots the ornithopter, carrying Victor and Cardia, to Buckingham Palace. When Victoria threatens to detain Cardia, Impey steps in front of Cardia to shield her from sight.

Chapter 7: The Buoyant and the Bellicose []

Delly now joins the crew for meals, and Impey is happy to see him enjoying his cooking. Lupin shows up with a new plan: they must enter into an airship race—the Black Gathering—in order to win a set of Isaac Beckford's notes, which would hopefully lead to his secret lab. Impey is put in charge of repairing Lupin's stolen airship for the Black Gathering competition. While everyone else goes off to find some way to earn money, Cardia decides to help Impey with the repairs.

One night, Cardia goes out to Impey's workstation to find him hard at work, and she brings him a sandwich that she made herself—with Saint-Germain's help, admittedly, since she had a hard time putting things together with her gloves on. Impey is grateful, claiming that it's the best he's ever had. As they sit together, Impey talks about how he loves looking at the stars when he's stressed out. Cardia asks him why he became an engineer, and he tells her that when he was young, he was amazed the first time he saw a steam locomotive, and at that moment he fell in love with engineering.

The morning of the competition, Impey gets down on his knees to apologize. He'd mistakenly thought that the competition was the day after, and the ship's engine isn't installed yet. Cardia apologizes, too, as she had also gotten the date wrong. The group goes on ahead to register, leaving Impey to finish his installations. However, they find that they can't register until their ship gets there, and that the competition will be closing registration soon. The group anxiously awaits Impey, worrying that he won't make it in time.

Impey eventually shows up with both the ship and a bombastic declaration of his identity, and that's when a nearby group of sky pirates realizes that the ship that Impey is piloting is the same ship that was stolen from them a while back. Stolen by Lupin. As such, the pirates are determined to shoot down Impey and his ship as payback.

While they are waiting, the group is confronted by Nemo, who marvels over the genius of Impey's airship design. Impey declares that his ship was designed to capture the essence of a maiden, and Nemo agrees. They appear to hit it off, and Nemo takes Impey to go see his own ship, leaving Cardia to handle all of the pre-flight protocols. After Impey returns, he admits that Nemo's ship is kind of amazing.

Once they get into the sky, Impey at the helm, all of the other ships start targeting them. However, the other ships are taken out by Nemo's ship, as Nemo has declared Impey his scientific rival, and therefore is the only one allowed to sink their ship. Cardia can choose either to help with the engines, in which case Impey goes down to the engines and leaves the steering to her, or to prepare for a counterattack, in which case she and Saint-Germain stick Van Helsing into a human cannon. Impey declares that it's fine because it's Van Helsing, the Human Weapon. They fire Van Helsing at Nemo's ship, where he takes out Nemo's cannons and blows the whole thing up. They reel Van Helsing back, and he smacks against the ship before vowing to beat the living daylights out of Impey once this is all over.

With their engines blown to smithereens, Impey has to crash land the ship into the finish line. They win first place, and everyone takes a commemorative photo. Cardia thanks Impey for helping her, and Impey gets embarrassed by the beauty of her smile. Van Helsing gets called out for having a crappy smile that's not as good as Impey's, and this wounds his pride.

Chapter 8: Nobody Understands the Truth[]

The crew gets together to go to Isaac's secret lab, and Impey marvels at the technology he sees. Cardia goes looking for information with Impey. While they're searching, Cardia finds a document with Nemo's name on it, indicating that Nemo has some connection with Isaac. When everyone regroups, Twilight shows up, and Impey stays behind to fight them off.

After Cardia finds out the truth about herself from Finis, Impey crashes their conversation and declares that the only person who can decide your true identity is yourself, not those around you. Cardia is moved by this. Before Finis and Impey can get into a fight, though, Finis runs into Saint-Germain's knife. Multiple times. Impey criticizes Saint-Germain for resorting to murder when there might have been another way. Saint-Germain replies that sometimes bloodshed is necessary, and Cardia comforts Impey by telling him that his compassion has saved her many times.

That night, Cardia prepares to strike off on her own, fearing that her presence puts everyone in danger, but she is intercepted by Impey, who is determined to help her.

Chapter 9: Steampunk[]

Cardia and Impey go looking for Nemo, and get his address from the organizers of the Black Gathering. The organizers offer to give him the information in exchange for Cardia, and Impey angrily turns them down, claiming that she belongs to him. Instead, they have them send the bill over to Lupin to handle. Not their problem, lol.

They find Nemo in his secret laboratory hidden in the woods, but they are attacked by him. Nemo realizes who they are, and explains that he'd just been robbed by pirates who took some of his most valuable technology. Impey offers to go retrieve it for him. It turns out that the device was taken by the same sky pirates who were pissy at Impey for stealing their airship. They sneak into the hideout and are about to steal the device back when Nemo bursts in with a declaration of war. He shouts that his accomplices have already infiltrated to compound, and that's when Impey and Cardia are discovered. Impey shows off his mad fighting skills.

At this point, Cardia realizes that Impey is a vampire, as that is the only explanation for his super-strength and durability. Impey asks if she's afraid of him, and she says that she isn't, because he's Impey. Besides, she's literally a homunculus with poison skin so he really isn't anything monstrous compared to her.

They return to Nemo's hideout, and he reveals the full splendor of his super-advanced laboratory. Nemo explains that he was one of Isaac's apprentices, and that he knew something of Isaac's experiments with the homunculi. Apparently, it was necessary to have a living body house the Horologium, but it would be impossible to insert an actual soul within the body as that was beyond the realm of science. This pains Cardia to hear. When Impey asks how to remove the poison from the Horologium, Nemo says that he'll explain more in the morning.

Cardia is restless with this knowledge, and goes walking around the lab. That's when she overhears Nemo talking with Twilight agents about using her, the homunculus, for his plans. She rushes back to Impey so they can escape, but they're knocked out with sleeping gas by Nemo.

Chapter 10: Captured[]

Cardia wakes up strapped to an operating table, a piece of Horologium missing from her chest. Nemo explains that he took it for his work, and that he needs to use Cardia. Cardia melts off her bindings and runs to go rescue Impey. She and Impey escape with the use of his hastily-constructed steam gun, but upon finding an exit from the lab, they realize that they're airborne. Nemo catches them and explains that they are aboard the Nautilus, his massive battleship that he will use to take over the world. Impey realizes that the ship is being lifted by his Gravity Alleviator, the very thing that was stolen from him that he's been looking for all this time. It requires a huge source of power, and is being fueled by Cardia's Horologium shard. Upon hearing that Impey made the Gravity Alleviator, Nemo offers to give him half of the world if he decides to be his partner in crime. Impey declines, and leaps out of the ship with Cardia in his arms.

Cardia is distraught that he would plunge them both to their deaths instead of just turning her over, and Impey declares his love for her as they fall through the sky. Cardia reciprocates. Out of nowhere, Lupin shows up in the ornithopter to catch them. Impey reveals that he had an emergency signal on him, and was alerted to Lupin's presence nearby, which was why he took the leap. Cardia passes out.

Chapter 11: Criminal Intent[]

Cardia wakes up in the mansion, and Victor explains that her body is slowly shutting down because it cannot handle the imbalance caused by a piece of Horologium being missing. She won't have much longer to live if the piece is not returned to her chest. On the bright side, this means that Cardia is no longer poisonous, and Impey takes her bare hand in his, giving her her first human touch.

The team gathers to explain everything that's happened, and Impey boasts that Cardia is in love with him now, much to the stunned disbelief of everyone around them. Cardia, embarrassed by his bragging, responds that she felt cornered by the situation they were in, and Impey weeps. Then, Nemo appears over London with his Nautilus and declares that they have 3 days to hand over Cardia or else he'll blow up the city. He starts by demonstrating his firepower on a densely-populated area, killing countless civilians. Everyone decides to evacuate to one of Lupin's hideouts.

While taking a walk, Cardia overhears some civilians raging that she won't turn herself in, and she feels guilty. Impey explains that Nemo will probably kill her when he takes the rest of the Horologium, and that if he has that much power, he'll truly be unstoppable, so she shouldn't feel guilty. Eventually, Sholmes drops by to pay a visit, along with Leonhardt, who brings them to the palace to speak with the queen.

Impey explains what's up with Nemo, and they all try to come up with a plan to stop him. Queen Victoria orders that the city be evacuated, as London will become a battlefield. Unfortunately, the queen's royal airforce isn't enough to stop him.

Up on the Nautilus, Nemo gloats at his victories, all while calling out for Isaac to notice him.

Chapter 12: The Grandest Dream[]

The night before the deadline, Impey and Cardia take a nighttime stroll to see the rubble of Nemo's attack. The sight of it depresses Impey, and he explains that Delly actually tried to recruit him in a plan for the surviving vampires to wipe out humanity. Impey declined because he wanted to focus on his own dream of going to the moon, which obviously upset Delly. Impey explains his backstory.

He was orphaned at a young age with no one but the moon as his companion. When he first saw a locomotive, he was so amazed by it that he tried to build his own out of rocks. A reclusive old vampire saw this, and took him under his wing. Impey's mentor was shunned for being fascinated by science, and he explains that he wanted to show how science could do amazing things. As such, he wanted to go to the moon, and Impey eventually came to carry his dream. It turns out that it was actually his mentor who invented the Gravity Alleviator. Unfortunately, while Impey was away, the British government gassed the village, killing his mentor. Impey was branded a traitor and a coward for not joining the survivors in avenging their fallen, but he refused to participate in violence. Impey laments that science is misused for war when it could be bringing joy and wonder to people all over the world.

Cardia realizes that there is no anger in him, only sadness at the state of the world. She still harbors doubts about her humanity given her origins as a homunculus, but Impey declares that she is a child of science, which means that she's made of hopes and dreams. She is a miracle, especially because she turned out good and kind. Knowing that they might die the next day, he proposes to her, and she can choose to either accept or decline. If she declines, she will explain that she doesn't like his proposal because she doesn't want to accept it under the looming threat of death. She wants to spend her future with him. They finally kiss. Then, Impey asks her if she'll go to the moon with him, and she kisses him again as her response.

Later, Impey has an epiphany about how to take down the Nautilus, and the two of them rush off to Saint-Germain's mansion to prep.

Chapter 13: Fly Me to the Moon[]

Impey presents his plan to take down Nemo: with the royal airforce as a distraction, Impey will sneak aboard the Nautilus and mess with the calibrations of the Gravity Alleviator such that it drifts up into the stratosphere, reducing the fallout that would've resulted from it crashing to the earth. Cardia is sad to hear that the Gravity Alleviator will be destroyed with the ship, but Impey reassures her that he can build another one with his own skills. Cardia's condition worsens, and she passes out.

Cardia's condition is deteriorating rapidly, so Impey will have to bring her aboard the Nautilus to get the shard back in her immediately. They vow to protect each other.

Nemo reminiscences on his own youth as a prince, how his homeland was invaded by the British and pulverized by their technology. He became obsessed with their science, and went to the Royal Society to pursue it. Due to his traumatic childhood, his worldview was warped to the point that he could justify anything in the pursuit of science, as the British had so brutally trampled over his people with their science, and eventually he was expelled from the Royal Society for being too radical. He and Queen Victoria's air force battle.

Elsewhere, Delly offers to come along with Impey and Cardia to kill Nemo, but Impey declines, saying that there's no need when all they have to do is stop him. Delly remarks that they're very different, and apologizes for hitting Impey after he rejected him. The crew takes off in an airship, preparing to deposit Impey and Cardia on the Nautilus. They sustain terrible damage, and Cardia has the choice to tell Impey to turn back or to keep going.

If Cardia chooses the former, then everyone but Impey will decide to turn the ship back, because Victoria's Airborne Knights are also retreating, and they'll all be shot out of the air if they try to keep going without the distraction. Cardia tells Van Helsing to release the gas bags so the ship will descend. Impey rages at everyone, but ultimately there is nothing he can do. That night, Cardia lies dying by Impey's side to look up at the moon, and she asks him to hold her hand. He does, and she tells him again that she loves him before she closes her eyes one final time.

If Cardia chooses the latter, then she'll feel guilty for risking everyone's lives, and Van Helsing will scold her for thinking that when it's also the future of the world at stake. They head toward the Nautilus, and Impey breaks in with Cardia in his arms. Unfortunately, Impey's device fails, and they are captured by Twilight and Nemo. Nemo reveals that he figured out Impey's plan, and took countermeasures to stop him. Nemo despairs over the fact that despite their similar backgrounds as genius scientists with tragic pasts, Impey refuses to understand Nemo. Impey says that he has the power of friendship and love on his side, and Nemo is disgusted by this. Impey manages to actually mess with the Gravity Alleviator, revealing that he'd planted the real device elsewhere and that the plan is actually a success. Impey then tries to reach out to Nemo, but it's too late.

Impey grabs the Horologium shard with his bare hands and returns it to Cardia, saving her life. Nemo, refusing to lose like this, pulls a self-destruct lever and is crushed by the rubble. The ship shuts down, and starts plummeting toward the earth. Impey takes the helm and tries to steer it while everything falls apart around them. He tells Cardia to go look for an escape pod for them to escape in.

Normal Ending: If Cardia goes looking for the escape pod, then Impey will accept that he'll die. He can steer the ship into the Thames to minimize the casualties, but the impact will kill him. After a while, he uses the ship's communication device to tell Cardia that she can't come back for him because the way back is blocked, and to get off the ship by herself. He reminiscences how he came to love her, and is thankful that he met her.

A year later, Cardia is still grieving over Impey. His body was never found, and he hasn't returned to her side. Everyone else accompanies Cardia to the train station before she heads off to America to work on a project to go to the moon. Cardia muses that she'll help carry out Impey's wish to show the world how wonderful science is, and believes that somewhere out there, Impey's watching over her.

Good Ending: If Cardia refuses to leave Impey's side, Cardia will call him out for trying to have her escape on her own knowing that he won't have time to escape if he stays behind. The two of them decide to try their luck by piloting into the Thames. They manage to survive, and he kisses her face one last time before her poison can return.

Some time later, Cardia and Impey are the only people still living in the mansion, as everyone else has gone their separate ways. Cardia finds him testing out his latest rocket prototype, although it fails. Still, Impey isn't discouraged. He asks her to marry him, and she says yes.

Extra[]

After the events of the main story, Impey is trying out different methods to get Sisi to like him. In one attempt, Cardia hides behind Impey so that Sisi will associate Impey with her, but it fails because Sisi goes straight to Cardia. Eventually, they create a perfume that smells like Sisi's favorite food, and spray it all over Impey. This works, but also causes Sisi to bite Impey on the arm. Still, this incident allows them to become closer.

It's a hot summer day, so Impey busts out his latest invention, a sprinkler system. He strips off and basks in the cool water, shirtless. He uses the hose to create a rainbow.

Relationships[]

Arsene Lupin[]

Prior to the start of the game, Impey hunted down Lupin, believing that Lupin had stolen his Gravity Alleviator. He realized that he was mistaken, and begged Lupin to help him look for it, which started their partnership.

They mock each other, with Impey being the butt of most jokes, but they're partners-in-crime, through and through.

Cardia Beckford[]

From the moment he first saw her, Impey was smitten. He's always flirting with her, usually to no avail. Nevertheless, he cares about her as a person and is supportive of any relationships she has, even if he is very vocal about how sad he is that she didn't fall in love with him.

Sisi[]

He was the one who rescued Sisi after he found the dog injured. He built Sisi his prosthetic leg that allows Sisi to run around. Unfortunately for Impey, Sisi doesn't like him very much.

Delacroix II[]

Impey feels a kinship with Delacroix, but disagrees with Delacroix's plans for taking revenge against humanity. Still, he cares about the kid, and has affectionately dubbed him "Delly" (Dora-chan), much to the vampire king's chagrin.

Abraham Van Helsing[]

They don't really get along, since Van finds him annoying. Van appreciates Impey's food, though, even if he won't admit it to Impey's face. Impey is absolutely willing to stick Van into a human cannon.

Herlock Sholmes[]

They don't really know each other, but Impey is amused that Sholmes manages to trip up Lupin all the time.

Saint-Germain[]

He's friendly with the count, but even so, Saint-Germain will cut him if he tries to sell off any of his antiques.

Victor Frankenstein[]

As two genius scientists, Impey and Victor get along very well. Victor is the least snarky toward Impey out of the gang.
