"There is only one true genius! And it's MEEEEEEEEE!"

Nemo is a scientist claiming to be the world’s preeminent researcher whose actions are questionable at best. Due to his irrational behavior, people rarely desire to interact with him. Yet there is no question he is quite the genius — with a moral compass more than a little skewed. He firmly believes no sacrifice is too great to complete his research, as long as he isn’t the one doing the sacrificing.[1]

Appearance[]

Nemo is a tall, dark-skinned lanky man with knee long white hair, highlighted with a few strips of a soft pink. He has at least 4 piercings, most on his mouth, gold teeth casings, and large, oddly-shaped brass goggles. Nemo also wears a black and red, crinolined captain's jacket splattered with purple paint, purple-striped pants, and thick matching leather gloves and boots with buckles of cogs and boat steering wheels. What the strange equipment is on his back has yet to be identified.

He is surprisingly handsome behind the outlandish goggles, something that he doesn't appear to be aware of or care about, as it is irrelevant to his scientific pursuits.

Personality[]

Nemo is an eccentric scientist with a loud, difficult personality. His passionate love for science is all that he appears to care about, and he doesn't hesitate to share his feelings at max volume. He latches onto any person who shows any interest in his inventions, and is obsessed with his "fellow genius scientists," Impey and Victor, as his esteemed rivals. When in pursuit of his goals, he is ruthless.

While he may not be a particularly compassionate person, caring little for the wellbeing of mankind, he cares deeply about the opinions of certain people and can be rather easily manipulated. He has surprisingly good insights about life, when he is calm.

Story[]

Nemo is a genius in his own right, having a place in the Royal Society. Prior to the start of the game, he gets kicked out when his ideas get too out of the control. Issac Beckford is the only one who acknowledges him. Nemo becomes his "student," wanting to make Issac proud, and becomes one of the foremost experts on Horologium, as a result.

Guardian of Rebirth: Impey's Route[]

When Cardia and Impey go to search for answers regarding her Horologium, they stumble across Nemo's laboratory. While Nemo is initially forthcoming in revealing some of his knowledge of her condition, based on his past research with Isaac, he betrays them and captures for his own purposes. Nemo uses a piece of Cardia's Horologium to power his airship, the Nautilus, which he uses to terrorize Steel London for days as a show of his genius. This is when Impey realizes that Nemo's ship uses the gravity alleviator that his mentor designed, the same one that he's been searching for all along.

During this route, it is revealed that Nemo was once the prince of a nation colonized by Great Britain. Witnessing the destructive military might of Great Britain firsthand as it tore through his homeland, Nemo becomes obsessed with the power of science. He believes that, in keeping with the lessons that the British taught his fellow countrymen years before, he who has the more powerful weapons has the right to make the rest of the world submit.

In the final confrontation between Lupin's Gang and Nemo, Nemo is crushed to death by the falling debris as his ship falls apart—all the while begging for Isaac to acknowledge his work.

In the Future Blessings After Story, Impey uses the metal alloy that Nemo designed for the Nautilus in his submarine design, remarking on its genius design and lamenting its creator's fate.

Guardian of Rebirth: Lupin's Route[]

Nemo appears briefly in this route, debuting the Nautilus and aiding in Finis's plans.

Extra Story: Finis's Route[]

Nemo is one of Finis's allies, although Finis only barely tolerates him for his scientific expertise. After Isaac finally returns to the world, speaking through Finis's body, Nemo is ecstatic, prepared to receive praise for all of his efforts in resurrecting his dead teacher. Unfortunately, Isaac doesn't spare a thought for him, and Finis recognizes Nemo as a foil to himself: no matter how earnestly they might seek to earn Isaac's favor, they are only pawns in his grand schemes.

When Aleister decides to help Finis stop Isaac, he manipulates Nemo into switching sides, seizing control of the ship, and stopping the Nautilus. Nemo is taken into custody, but due to his change of heart and generally cooperative behavior, he lives comfortably in the London prisons.

After Story: Herlock's Route[]

Following the defeat of Aleister and the dissolution of Twilight, Nemo is left without any sponsors for his research and ends up on the streets. Cardia encounters him in the London sewers, starving and living out of a cardboard box. His sudden reappearance proves useful, as his expertise is critical in Herlock's plans to synthesize a cure for Cardia's Horologium before she poisons all of London. He works alongside Victor, Impey, and the others for a year to create a cure, as Cardia waits in her medically-induced slumber.

Relationships[]

Impey Barbicane[]

He sees Impey as a fellow genius scientist, first coming across him during the airship competition. Nemo is zealously competitive with him, finding delight in trying to one-up someone else who loves science as much as he does. They have diametrically opposing perspectives, however, on the ethics of science. Despite this, Impey is very sympathetic to his rival scientist.

Victor Frankenstein[]

Nemo has a one-sided rivalry/friendship with Victor from their time together at the Royal Society. Victor finds him to be a bit of a nuisance to deal with.

Isaac Beckford[]

When no one else at the Royal Society was willing to acknowledge Nemo's skills, Isaac would find value in Nemo's research. While Nemo is passionately dedicated to earning Isaac's favor, craving his validation, Isaac only sees Nemo as a means to an end.

Trivia[]

  • He is loosely based on the literary figure Captain Nemo, created by Jules Verne, who also created Impey Barbicane. He first appeared in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870).
  • His name, Nemo, means "nobody". It is very likely that like in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", his name is not actually Nemo - it's just an alias.
  • While never explicitly stated in the text, it can be inferred from his namesake and his backstory that Nemo is of Indian descent.
  • Nemo is the inventor of cardboard in the Code: Realize universe.
  • Along with the other Code: Realize characters, he appears in Sephirot ~World Tree of Time~ as one of the collectable cards. He is of the skill class.
